From the Greek lampros (“shining”) and kapnos (“smoke”), with spectabilis meaning “remarkable.” Native to East Asia, its heart-shaped blossoms are admired worldwide. Yet isoquinoline alkaloids in all parts render it mildly toxic if ingested.
